Mia Forrest’s practice draws on ecological systems and natural phenomena, translating biodata, sound and vibration into work across pigment, textiles, digital media, metalwork and paper.
Flanksia is an assembly of two Australian Native plant species: the Hinchinbrook Banksia (banksia plagiocarpa) and the native flannel wildflower (actinotus helianthi). The Hinchinbrook Banksia flower is considered rare and is endemic to Hinchinbrook Island located on the Cassowary Coast Region. The Flannel Flower is a delicate wooly textured wild flower that is commonly found in coastal NSW environments.
Mia’s Bloom artworks hybridize time, technology, and nature; botanicals take on new identities as surreal stretching forms bloom upward, revealing a DNA-like helix, inviting the viewer to contemplate how species morph, change, survive, and thrive over time, particularly in the digital-age. Through the use of expanded time and digital generative applications, Flanksia re-imagines botanicals within an alternate time-space continuum, challenging antiquated still-life conventions.
