About
Josephine Kokfelt Ehlers is an artist based in the Byron Bay hinterland working across abstract painting, photography and collage. Her practice explores an ongoing fascination with the urban landscape, architecture, colour, line, shape and structure. Working between observation and abstraction, Josephine is drawn to the overlooked details of everyday environments - houses, roads, windows, fences, reflections and fragments of architecture. Her work moves between the familiar and the imagined, using intuitive processes and playful experimentation to transform these observations into paintings and images that explore ideas of place, home and the spaces we inhabit.
Following the loss of her father, Josephine spent time with family and friends on Bornholm. During those months, she became absorbed by the houses and landscapes around her - noticing how a place can begin to feel familiar, and how quickly that feeling can shift. Made on Bornholm during this time, Sucker Punch is a reflection on place, memory and the ever-changing idea of home.
